The Vayable Community + Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy has affected hundreds of our guides and community members living and traveling to NYC or any other city affected by Sandy.  The biggest concern is staying safe, staying warm, and being able to connect with your loved ones to make sure they know you’re ok.

What we’re doing to help:

Free shelter:  We are offering FREE ACCOMMODATION at an Airbnb to any Vayable guides or travelers who have booked Vayable experiences in NYC and are without shelter.  We’ll pick up the tab for you for three nights if you find yourself without a safe place to stay.

Charge up: For any Vayable guides and travelers in NYC without electricity, we will help you find some through our network in NYC.

24/7 Concierge: From now until November 7, we are offering our concierge services for free to anyone who needs help with travel arrangements, finding accommodation  food, electricity or needs help contacting family and friends. Simply email concierge@vayable.com and put “SANDY” in the subject.

How you can help:

Those in NYC:

  1. If you have accommodation to offer, extra warmth, food, transportation or an electrical outlet, please contact us at concierge@vayable.com and we will add you to our helpers list for those in need.
  2. Share your stories:  The news media struggles to surface the real stories of what’s happening, leaving those of us outside of NYC ignorant and ill-informed.  Please let us know how you are, what’s happened and share you experience with us.  Leave a comment here, tweet us @vayable or post to our Facebook Wall to help inform the rest of the world and allow us to support you.

Those outside NYC:

  1. Email us at concierge@vayable.com if you’d like to volunteer to help as a remote concierge to our travelers and guides in NYC who may need help with logistics and travel plans.
  2. If you have any friends or family in NYC who are willing to open up their homes to others in the community, please let us know.

Experience the National Conventions!

Politicians won’t be the only big, bad cats on the block in Tampa, FL this August. The Big Cat Reserve lets visitors interact with big cats with their Keeper for a Day Tour. Does the high of a political convention make you regret forsaking your ambition to become a secret agent? You know it does. Would flying a fighter jet ease the pain of this regret? You know it would. If talking politics makes you want to rip your clothes off and run away to a nudist colony. You can try that too. Visitors to the Republican National Convention later this month can now book these experiences and many more on Vayable’s new Experience the RNC website and the Experience the DNC site, which curates unique experiences in Charlotte for the 2012 Democratic National Convention on September 3.

This year, Vayable is bringing  its unique take on travel experiences to the National Conventions  with the launch of ExperiencetheRNC.com and ExperiencetheDNC.com  Vayable is working with local communities in Tampa and Charlotte to provide convention-goers with a deeper, richer way to engage in politics and local life.

Political engagement experiences
Charlotte visitors can connect with the environment with a Canopy zip-line tour meet with local leaders helping end homelessness, learn about a healthy lifestyle on the Preventive Obamacare Tour. In Tampa, FL visitors can release some steam on the Ladies Hog Hunting Tourand 2nd Amendment Tour or learn more about LGBTQ culture on the Gay Pride Tour.

Local life and culture experiences
Need an escape from days of political jabber? Tampa and Charlotte are rich with cultural experiences and outdoor adventure. Visitors in Charlotte, NC can expand their gastronomic horizons with one of Kristi’s fantastic food tours. Choose from the Brew and Chew Tour and the Uptown Chic Behind-the-Scenes tour or both! Kick back in gator country with Alligator Bob in Tampa. Explore the quirky, bohemian NoDa neighborhood at their monthly gallery crawl. Tour the layout and history of the Queen City with Paul, a Charlotte native and local government employee. Find inner peace with paddle boarding and yoga in Tampa. Spike adrenaline levels with an All Sport Pass to the US National Whitewater Center.

Summer of a Million Visitors

This summer is my “Summer of a Million Visitors.” Ok, so I stopped counting when I reached 20+ in two months, but it’s still a lot. I’ve had a ton of fun with my out-of-towners, but I’ve also learned a thing or two about travel in the city I’ve made my home thanks to them.

1. There is more than one way to do any given activity in Paris. Day of week (closures or free days) or time of day (hello, late night openings) can totally make a difference. Anywhere you go, try to discover when these options to help make your visit a bit more special, and hopefully will avoid some crowds. That’s why locals are awesome – they can save you time, energy, and money.

2. Just because everyone says you have to go to X or see Y or eat Z it doesn’t mean you’re going to love it just because they did. Think about what you love, and the kind of things that make you happy, and make those your priority. For instance, I was hanging out with my friends’ three daughters one afternoon (while the parents were off). I knew they were big tennis fans, so I took them to Hotel de Ville where the Roland Garros [French Open] finals were on live – not something you see everyday. I mean, if you have a thing for taxidermy, I even have some great recs for that!

3. Don’t be afraid to do something just because it’s “touristy.” In all the time I’ve spent in Paris, I had never been to the top of the Arc de Triumph until I had friends in town. I was very pleasantly surprised, and it’s one of my favorite views of Paris now. Just goes to show that even a “local” has things they can learn from visitors, and some things are worth seeing.

4. When I had dear friends in town for three days there were so many things I wanted to show them in so little time. We did a lot – maybe too much, but remember it’s ok if you don’t accomplish everything you set out to. It’s always nice to have an excuse to travel again and go back!

5. As someone who seems to have a constant stream of visitors in Paris, the best possible words you can hear from your friends’ mouths are “All we want to do is walk, people watch and drink wine.” This is a true statement, and from a friend who had never been to Europe before. It’s funny, with the pressure off to show them everything, I gave one of my best “tours” ever. It’s also what inspired me with Vayable.

Part of the fun of giving tours on Vayable is meeting new people and having the excuse to experience new things. Seeing Paris the same way gets old for me, but every time I meet up with someone I learn something new or think about Paris in a new way. I have a couple more tours in the works, but I created Navigate Paris because each time I go to a new place I want to get a basic understanding of where I am to get my bearings. Sometimes the obvious – things like how to buy a metro ticket or where streets signs are located – are not always evident until someone points them out to you. My goal is to empower people with knowledge, so after the session is over they feel like an expert themselves. I always love adding a local perspective too as we may our way through the day. But most importantly, I listen to whoever I’m showing around. I want to be able to show them my city in a way that makes sense and appeals to them. It helps challenge me to dig deeper too, and of course keeps things interesting. I don’t pretend to know all the answers, but 9 times out of 10 I can tell the person where to go for more.

Vayable Goes to Milan

Vayable was a featured startup at Social Media Week in Milan this year, where our founders, Shelly Roche and Jamie Wong, took center stage on a panel on women and the web at the Italian tech festival. They spent the week on multiple panels, chatting with their Italian counterparts about everything from security, to quality of life, to how to launch a startup. Together with friend and advisor, Justin Kan, founder and president of Justin.tv and its spinoff, Twitch.tv, the founders served as judges at Startup Weekend’s demo day, where aspiring Italian entrepreneurs pitched their ideas to a panel of VCs, lawyers and founders.
